About the project

Over half the world’s population will or has menstruated - so why is it we still don’t talk about periods?

The Wandering Womb was developed in an attempt to fight the taboo and promote conversations about menstruation. You can wander into our giant walk-in uterus to find out all there is to know about menstrual health. Whether you’ve never had a period, you’re well versed in the art of menstruating, or you’re just at the beginning of your menstrual journey, you can come along to find out more about the biology behind menstruation and everything that goes alongside it. Learn about different menstrual health conditions, such as endometriosis, heavy menstrual bleeding, and PCOS. Discover what is considered a ‘typical’ period, and the signs and symptoms that suggest something might be awry.

The Wandering Womb has been developed by Francesca Hearn-Yeates, a PhD student researching endometriosis at The University of Edinburgh, and Rutie Borthwick, an artist with lived experience of endometriosis.
